Andrew primarily acts for landholders who are threatened with resumption of their
property by mining companies, local authorities and government utilities. During
this traumatic time he assists clients initially by explaining the legal procedures
involved and the possible outcomes. These types of matters can often be protracted
and cause stress, particularly when a family farm or home is the subject of the
application.
Andrew has been practicing as a solicitor in Rockhampton since 1974 and has been
specialising in resumption matters for 15 years. He is regularly called upon to
speak on this topic to landholders and other interest groups such as valuers. He
has had particular experience in cases involving grazing properties affected by
mining activity.
His record of successfully negotiating outcomes with mining companies and government
instrumentalities is well known throughout Central Queensland. Knowing that Andrew
has also handled many matters in the Land and Resources Tribunal, gives clients
confidence that all options will be thoroughly explored when he is negotiating an
outcome.
Andrew was born into a family of lawyers. His father, uncle and brother have all
been partners at Rees R & Sydney Jones. He views his role to be that of a problem
solver charged with the task of ensuring that people's rights and commercial
interests are protected. The strategies he devises are designed to optimise his
client's commercial outcomes. A key element of his strategy in compensation
claims is to bring together the client, the valuer and the solicitor as a cohesive
team.
In rural conveyancing Andrew is well regarded for the depth of his knowledge of
the implications of property transfer. However, it is his accessibility that clients
most appreciate. He regularly visits properties or takes phone calls from clients
after hours.
Andrew has always had a strong involvement in community activities. His contribution
to rugby union as a referee and official is well known. He has been closely involved
with the Salvation Army for many years, more recently as Chairman of the Rockhampton
Advisory Board. He has held office as President of the Central Queensland Law Association
on two occasions.
